Author of the Month: Angie Thomas

This month's featured author, Angie Thomas, was an instant success after the release of her debut teen novel, "The Hate U Give" in 2017. The story of sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, who witnesses the murder of her best friend during a traffic stop. Starr is the sole witness to the crime, and in addition to grieving her best friend, she must try to find her voice in order to stand up for what is right. "The Hate U Give" went on to become a #1 New York Times Bestseller, a multi-award winner, not to mention a major motion picture, and for the past two years, Thomas's fans have been eagerly awaiting her sophomore novel.

Released this month, "On the Come Up" is a very personal novel for Thomas. A story about a talented teen rapper named Bri who is confronted with the sacrifices one must take in order to succeed in the music business, Thomas draws from her own past experiences as an aspiring teen rapper -- she was once featured in Right-On Magazine. Fighting for your dream is never easy, and Bri faces a mountain of challenges from the start, but her music allows her to process the injustices that she faces in life, and bring us all in to her world. Thomas's new book is based in the same Garden Heights neighborhood as "The Hate U Give", and is equally as captivating.
