A Different Way to Look at Fairy Tales

Most of us read - or were read - fairy tales as children. In honor of National Tell A Fairy Tale Day, take a look at these titles that take a different approach to some well known stories.

Cinder is a take on Cinderella. Cinder is an orphaned android living in New Beijing, China somewhere in the future. Cinder is a mechanic who ends up in the employ of Prince Kai. The series follows Cinder's adventures and is made up of 5 titles. The series goes on to include the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.

The Fairy Godmother is Mercedes Lackey's version of retelling fairy tales. The premise is that characters are supposed to have "fairy tale" lives and a happily ever after. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in A Ship of Her Own Making is a series about a girl who goes to Fairyland and her adventures there. Girl power, how to deal with government, and acceptance of others are a few of the topics covered in these books.
