“Slow” Living

I first came across the book Slow: Simple Living for a Frantic World, by Brooke McAlary, while I was paying invoices for the library and this book was on the list. The title intrigued me, so I wrote down the call number on a sticky note, which sat on my desk for three weeks. As I was sorting my to do pile, the sticky note was unearthed and I looked up the book to put a hold on it. It was my lucky day since the book was on the shelf and I checked it out.

I had every intention of starting the book right away, but it sat on my night stand for about a week (are you seeing a pattern?). I finally started it while we were out of town on a long weekend. The book is simply written with clear and direct information. After chapter 4, titled "Mindfulness," I had my "ah ha" moment.

Why are our coveted weekends filled to the brim with activities that we don't really want to do? Why do the dishes have to be done before I play with my son before he goes to bed? Why do I feel the need to "keep up with the Joneses" (ironically my husband's best friend is a Jones)? Why can't I just enjoy an afternoon with nothing scheduled?

This book just scratches the surface of living with intention and being mindful of your choices. But, it was a wake up call for me and will hopefully lead to positive changes in the near future. I've already enjoyed rocking my son to sleep for a little longer than necessary, just because I want to.
