May's artist is Kalli Halpern. You can find her pieces on display all month long in the Brick Wall Gallery.
Kalli's artist statement:
This group of pictures is inspired by a quote from Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick:
IT IS NOT DOWN IN ANY MAP;
TRUE PLACES NEVER ARE.
I believe we gather memories from our true places and they become a part of us. Some of these places are no longer there but we can imagine them.
There are some places I know that I will never see again but I remember.
This body of work is made on 180 lb. black letter press paper. I use colored pencils and waxed pastel crayons that make beautiful colors whether used dry or wet. I dip a lot of my work in water; the paper is dense and holds up to experimenting. I lose some that I have overworked.
Before I retired, I was involved in art in East Lansing for 30 years. My last place in art was Trillium Gallery.
I feel fortunate to share my art in the Brick Wall Gallery. This is a perfect place for those who are beginning as well as for those who have been showing for years.
