AVAILABLE POSITION Customer Service Assistant
PAY RATE: $16.75/hr - $22.84/hr
HOURS PER WEEK: 20 hours per week union position. Includes nights and weekends.
This position is represented by the UAW Local 2256 ELPL Non-Supervisory Unit

The East Lansing Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic Customer Service Assistant with customer service experience, problem solving skills, and the ability to work in a team environment to provide direct customer service at the Service Desk assisting patrons.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
- Proactively provide welcoming and compassionate customer service in person, over the phone and via email.
- Assist patrons with checking out and reserving materials, sending materials by mail, holding items in lockers and on hold shelves.
- Promote and recommend library materials, events, and services for patrons of all ages.
- Serve as first level/front line staff in resolving patron concerns.
- Provide basic technical support for patron technology issues such as printing, email, social media, and Microsoft Office.
- Handles monetary interactions including cash and credit transactions.
- Help lead the opening and/or closing operations, including managing money, ensuring the startup or shutdown of equipment and unlocking and/or locking of doors.
- Follow and uphold library policies as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Customer service experience
- Working knowledge of common computer applications including Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and Microsoft Windows operating system.
- Flexible availability for scheduling
PREFERRED
- Experience with Integrated Library Systems, preferably Innovative Sierra.
SCHEDULE
- Average of four shifts per week, each approximately five hours in length
- Starting as early as 9:00 am, working as late as 9:15 pm
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to withstand and perform routine and repetitive motions such as bending, crouching, reaching, standing, and pushing on a regular basis
- Ability to lift library materials weighing up to 50 lbs., and to push book trucks weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Ability to sit and stand and use computers for extended periods.
