Help us Shape the Future of East Lansing Public Library!

The library has begun our Strategic Planning Process! The new Strategic Plan will help guide our library for the next few years. It will tell us what our community thinks is most important, and give us ideas for how best to serve you. This will inform what our priorities are, what programs we do, how we set our budget, etc.

Through this process, we'll be reaching out for community feedback through a survey (available online or via paper) and community conversations. This is a chance for us to better understand people’s aspirations for their community, the concerns they have, and what they believe might make a difference in strengthening the community. You do not need to be an expert. We are looking for your input as someone who cares about our community. We’ll take what we learn from the survey and community conversations, and use it as part of our strategic planning process to help make the work of the library in the community more effective.

Check back here for updates on the process and how you can participate!

Community Conversations

We are hosting five community conversations to learn more about people's aspirations for the community. Each conversation is expected to take 90 minutes to two hours. Participants will receive a Tasty Twist coupon as a thank you and be entered into a random drawing to win a $25 gift card. Space is limited and registration is required to attend one of these conversations. Please register for one of the sessions below:

June 6, 6:30-8:30pm: Hooked Bookstore

June 7, 1-3pm: Hannah Community Center

June 8, 10am-12pm: Broad Art Museum

June 8, 3-5pm: Schuler Books

June 10, 7-9pm: East Lansing Public Library

Community Survey

Please take our quick survey to share what you want from your library. Everyone who completes the survey will earn a sweet treat and be entered into a random drawing to see a Lugnuts game OR a show at the Wharton Center! Winners of the random drawing will be chosen June 30.

We want to hear from everyone: active library users (including non-residents), AND people who don’t currently use library services but might be eligible to.

Timeline of the Strategic Planning Process

  • In May, library staff conducted 1:1 interviews with community leaders in East Lansing.
  • In early June, the library held five “community conversations” focus groups. While the survey is running this month, MCLS will look at data from comparable libraries across the nation to use as a benchmark.
  • In August, library staff will use all the data compiled by MCLS to begin creating the library’s new strategic priorities and an implementation plan.
  • This fall, the final strategic plan will be implemented and shared with the public.
