AVAILABLE POSITION        Tech Help Intern

PAY RATE:                           $15.29 per hour                                                 

HOURS PER WEEK:             15-20 hours per week. Schedule includes day, evening, and weekend shifts. Contingent part-time. Union Position. 

EMPLOYMENT DURATION: 12 months upon date of hire.

PURPOSE:

The East Lansing Public Library is seeking a tech-savvy and patient intern to provide direct technology assistance to library patrons and support our public computing services. 

SCHEDULE

  • Approximately 3-4 shifts per week, including evenings and weekends.
  • Shifts are scheduled between the hours of 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

REQUIRED

  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a program related to Information Technology, Computer Science, or a similar field.
  • Strong customer service orientation and patience when working with learners of all skill levels.
  • Proficiency with common computer applications, operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android), internet browser, and mobile devices.
  • Flexible availability for scheduling.

PREFERRED

  • Familiarity with library digital resources (e.g. Libby, Hoopla).
  • Experience in tutoring, teaching, or providing one-on-one technology assistance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit and use computers for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move computer equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Provide friendly, one-on-one technology assistance to patrons on a walk-up or appointment basis.
  • Assist patrons with basic computer tasks, including email, web browsing, document creation (Microsoft Office, Google Docs), and printing.
  • Help patrons navigate and use library digital resources, such as e-books, audiobooks, digital magazines, and online databases.
  • Offer support for personal devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops (e.g., connecting to Wi-Fi, downloading apps, basic troubleshooting).
  • Serve as a first point of contract for troubleshooting public-facing library equipment including computers, printers, photocopiers, and audiovisual systems.
  • Assist in setting up library technology for programs and workshops.
  • Document common patron issues and help develop solutions and help guides.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in a public service environment, develop teaching and communication skills, and learn about the technology needs of a diverse community.
