AVAILABLE POSITION Communications Intern
PAY RATE: $14.85 per hour
HOURS PER WEEK: 15 hours/week. Part-time. Union Position. Includes nights and weekend hours.

PURPOSE:
The Communications Intern will support the Communications Team as they promote the library’s materials, services and programs in alignment with the Library’s Strategic Plan. This position will have the opportunity to work with an experienced communications professional, and gain applied experience with the basics of copywriting, graphic design, videography, media relations, and email marketing. This position will also gain basic knowledge of how a public library operates. We are looking for a curious, creative candidate who is ready to learn, and who prioritizes accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work. This position is designed to give a boost to anyone early in their communications career, or anyone interested in exploring the field; to ensure that experiential learning is accessible to any interested and qualified candidate, you do not need to be enrolled in an academic program to apply.
This internship will run for twelve months upon the date of hire.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide project management support
- Draft copy and video content for the library’s website, email newsletters, and social media
- Assist with photography at library events
- Assist with captioning videos and drafting alt text for images
- Collect and analyze social media data
- Use graphic design tools like Canva to create graphics for promotional materials
- Assist with data and content maintenance
- Assist with outreach and promote library programs on community calendars
- Pitch interview ideas, compile background research, and help write talking points
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Organization and time management skills
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
- Experience with various social media platforms; (additional experience with their associated data tracking tools preferred)
- Aptitude for design and appealing aesthetics
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment
- Ability to lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds; set up tables and chairs for programs.
- Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending and squatting
- Ability to crouch and kneel to reach equipment near the floor
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with background noise
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Majority of work is performed inside the library, with some opportunities for outreach in the East Lansing community. Work from home agreements are available for a hybrid work environment. This position is not suited for fully remote work.
- Weekly work schedule can be flexible, with working hours from 10am-9pm.
- Requires periodic participation and attendance at library events and staff training, including some evenings and/or weekends.

The East Lansing Public Library is a 26,000 square foot facility centrally located within East Lansing, just north of Michigan State University. The library includes meeting room spaces, quiet study areas, dedicated teen and children’s areas, a Maker Studio, a cafe area, a fireplace lounge, and a bird sanctuary.
