Library and City of East Lansing Closed - Wednesday, February 2, 2011

The East Lansing Public Library and City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, February 2.  Normal hours will resume on Thursday, February 3rd.

Geek the Arts

Library Meeting Room/Art Gallery

The East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), will host a Geek the Arts celebration on Sunday, Feb. 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

 The event will feature an exhibition of the talented work of East Lansing resident and artistic photographer Ziad Youssfi, presented by the Friends of the East Lansing Public Library in the Library Art Gallery. The event will also feature a sneak preview of the All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre’s upcoming performance “Pixies, Kings and Magical Things: Four Tales by Hans Christian Andersen” at 2:30 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room; and a performance by the MSU Community Music School at 3 p.m. in the Library Art Gallery.

 The Geek the Arts celebration is a part of ELPL’s ongoing participation in Geek the Library, a national community-based public awareness campaign. The campaign highlights what people are passionate about, what they “geek” and how libraries can support them. The campaign has been launched in an effort to heighten awareness about the critical funding issues public libraries face. Visit www.geekthelibrary.org for more information.

Japanese Bilingual Story Time

LEGO Creation Day

Sunday, January 23 (2 - 3:30 pm) is the next LEGO Creation Day at the East Lansing Public Library.

Please join us to create your own masterpiece using our LEGOs and we will display it in the Children's Department of the library for two weeks!

Although this activity is recommended for ages 4 & up (some of the LEGO pieces are very small), younger children are welcome if they are supervised by an adult.

The next LEGO Creation Day is Sunday, February 27, 2 - 3:30 pm

New Director at ELPL -- Kristin Shelley

On January 18th the East Lansing Public Library will welcome Kristin Shelley, ELPL's new Director, to East Lansing.  Ms. Shelley was most recently the Deputy Director of the Worthington Libraries, located in Worthington, Ohio.  The Friends of the East Lansing Public Library will be hosting a welcome reception for Ms. Shelley Friday, January 28th, from 4-6pm in the Library's meeting room.

Following a nationwide search, Shelley was selected from a pool of more than 25 applicants to serve as the new ELPL director. A search committee made up of community stakeholders, East Lansing City Councilmembers and members of the East Lansing Public Library Board of Trustees conducted interviews and came to a unanimous consensus earlier this fall. Shelley’s start date is January 18, 2011.

Overdrive has just released a new Media Console app for iPhone and Android.  Download it from our Overdrive site or find it in the iTunes App Store or Android Market.  Good news - it also works on the iPad!  And even better news - a native app for the iPad will be coming soon.

There are some excellent online resources to get you started with your new eReader but if you get stuck help is available.  Schedule a One-on-One appointment with an ELPL Techie to find out how to use your new eReader or iPad.  To make a reservation call (517) 351-2420 ext. 104 and leave a message or email elpltech@cityofeastlansing.com  A Techie will contact you within 24 hours to make a One-on-One reservation. 

Holiday Closings

ELPL will be closed the following days:

December 23rd through December 26th
and
December 31st through January 2nd

During these closures the Library's drive up book drop will also be closed.  Library patrons are asked to not leave any library materials outside the building during these closures.  No physical materials will be due during these closures although due dates for eBooks and eAudio remain in effect.  So stay home and enjoy some extra time with your books, movies and music!  And if you haven't already stop by ELPL on December 20th, 21st and 22nd to stock up for the holidays.

American History through Music - From Roots to Rap

East Lansing Public Library

Join us for a journey through American popular music history.  Reverend Robert Jones and Sister Bernice take you through many major styles of African American influenced music, including spirituals, blues, jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel and rap.  No registration required.  All ages welcome.
