Maker Spaces, Fab Labs or Hacker Spaces, whatever you call them, they are catching on all across the country, especially in public libraries.  For years libraries have offered craft, educational and do-it-yourself programs for patrons.  Now we are retooling those programs to include science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) components and provide patrons with an opportunity to create in the broadest sense of the term.  Maker spaces offer educational programs in a fun, play-oriented environment.  They allow library patrons t

Summer Reading 2013 Kick-Off Event

East Lansing Public Library

Join us for lots of fun for the whole family at ELPL’s big summer reading kick-off! Yes, you read the time correctly! We have four hours of awesome activities planned to celebrate the beginning of our eight-week Summer Reading Program. We couldn't be more excited and hope to see you there! Bring your lunch for an outdoor picnic and stay the whole time or feel free to visit for just a portion of the time. Pick up your reading logs at the Library or download one here.

Volunteers needed!

The library is seeking a pool of volunteers to assist with on-site and off-site library events.

This is an on-call volunteer position. Volunteers will be engaging with the public, talking to community members and sharing information about the East Lansing Public Library and its services.

Duties:

Setting up, staffing, and cleaning up information booths
Sharing written and verbal information about the library
Helping with arts and crafts, button-making, and prize drawings
Applicants MUST be able to provide their own transportation to event sites

Calling all quilters! Community Quilt Project

If you like to sew and help out the library then this opportunity is for you!  We are launching a year long project called The Community Quilt Project.  Our goal is to make as many lap quilts as we can to auction off at our annual library fundraiser in April 2014.  We need donations of fabric, quilt batting, thread, talent and time.

Our first Maker Space opportunity for quilting will be June 18, 6:30-7:30.  For more details check the Community Quilt display located in the library.
