Better Living Book Club

The mission of the Better Living Book Club is to read practical and inspirational material that enhances our lives.  As life gets more complicated, we'll focus on readings with suggestions for living more fully with greater joy and less stress.

The Better Living Book Club is hosted by Robin Rushbrook, an Adult Reference Librarian at ELPL.  Read all of the Better Living Book Club blog posts.

Better Living Book Club - June 2013

We'll be meeting Monday night, June 3 at 7:00 pm to politely discuss the issue of civility.  Hopefully, we can all be fairly civilized as we agree or disagree with Amy Alkon's approach to public rudeness in I See Rude People: one woman's battle to beat some manners into impolite society.  This title is for those of you who are not shy about confronting the boorish behavior we often see out in the world!

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Tonight, I will have the honor of talking with two book clubs about my beloved time spent hiking the Appalachian Trail! When I hiked the trail, it was 2,164 miles long. It's stretched a little longer now, but it was long enough then! 1998 seems like a long time ago most days, but my memories of the trail are crystal clear. It made a huge impression on me and I have carried it with me in my heart every day since I last set foot on it. When I read Cheryl Strayed's book Wild, it brought back so many feelings and thoughts about my own long distance solo hike. I laughed and cried along with her and often knew exactly what she was talking about. I don't think I've ever read a book that had so many torn little bits of paper marking so many pages by the time I read the last sentence. Although our reasons for setting off on our long solo journeys were quite different, they were also very much the same. I am so excited to talk with everyone at the East Lansing Public Library's combined meeting of the Better Living Book Club and Books on Tap at Jimmy's Pub from 6:30-8 pm tonight! If you haven't read Wild yet, you still have time! You are also welcome to attend if you're still reading (we'll try not to spoil anything)! Better Living Book Club - February 2013

East Lansing Public Library

On February 12 the Better Living Book Club will be joining up with Books on Tap at Jimmy's Pub for a book group crossover discussion of Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Wild traces the personal crisis the author endured after the death of her mother and a painful divorce, which prompted her to undertake a dangerous 1,100-mile hike that both drove her to rock bottom and helped her to heal.

This meeting will also feature guest speaker, Karrie Korroch. Karrie has hiked the Appalachian Trail and will share some of her experiences from the trail.

The Better Living Book Club and the Apocalypse of 2012

The Better Living Book Club will discuss the phenomena of December 21, 2012 on Monday, November 5 at 7:00pm.  Our book selection, The Complete Idiot's Guide to 2012 by Andrews and Andrews, hopefully answered all our questions ....or maybe not!  It turns out to be more complicated topic than one might think. Join us as we discuss whether to be afraid, curious, or hopeful. Local astrologer and expert in the metaphysical, Carole Ray, will offer her suggestions for survival!

The October 1 meeting of the Better Living Book Club has been canceled.  Club leader Robin Rushbrook is out with a nasty cold.  Stay tuned for more info on when this title might be re-scheduled.

Better Living Book Club: Kindred Spirits!

Join us Monday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 pm as we discuss Kindred Spirits: how the remarkable bond between humans and animals can change the way we live by Allen M. Schoen, DVM.  The author, a holistic vet, shares his belief that there is more to medicine than drugs and that disease can be prevented and treated through nutrition, exercise, love, compassion, and the formation of meaningful bonds with other species.   Dr. Anne Rice, a local holistic vet with twenty-five years of experience, will join us to share her perspective on animals and the book. We should have a great night sharing our experiences with our animal companions.
