Books & Bagels October 6

It's a new school year and the first meeting of Books and Bagels, a book discussion group for children in grades 4-6 will be held Saturday, October 6, from 2-3 pm.

I'm breaking from convention and choosing TWO titles that are very similar - Wonder by R.J. Palacio (also available in eBook format through ELPL) and Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. YOU CHOOSE which one to read. Or read both if you'd like!

Due to budget cuts, free copies of the books will no longer be available to those signing up. Copies may be checked out from our library or inter-library loaned through MeLCat .

Wonder: Ten-year-old Auggie Pullman, who was born with extreme facial abnormalities and was not expected to survive, goes from being home-schooled to entering fifth grade at a private middle school in Manhattan, which entails enduring the taunts and fear of his classmates as he struggles to be seen as just another student. Check out R.J. Palacio's web site: rjpalacio.com and Choose Kind , an anti-bullying campaign inspired by Wonder.

Out of My Mind:

Considered by many to be mentally retarded, a brilliant, impatient fifth-grader with cerebral palsy discovers a
technological device that will allow her to speak for the first time. Check out Sharon Draper's web site: sharondraper.com

Registration isn't required, but it would be appreciated in order to have enough bagels to go around. If you will be attending, please send an email to Mary Jo Gallagher at mgallag@cityofeastlansing.com
